Blackmagic Design has significantly expanded the capabilities of its professional-grade smartphone camera application with the release of version 3.3 for iOS. The update introduces Apple Watch support, enabling creators to monitor and control their iPhone camera directly from their wrist, opening new possibilities for solo content production and live streaming workflows.

The companion Watch app allows users to manage recording sessions remotely within Wi-Fi range, providing intuitive controls for essential camera parameters. Through the wearable interface, creators can start and stop recording, adjust zoom levels, and fine-tune settings including frame rate, shutter speed, white balance, and ISO sensitivity. The Watch display also offers a live video preview for compositional framing, though the smaller screen size presents limitations for precise focus verification.

This feature proves particularly valuable for independent creators who mount their iPhone on a tripod for standup performances, vlogs, or other fixed-position recording scenarios. Setup is straightforward—users simply install the Watch app from their iPhone, and the application automatically syncs with the connected device.

Beyond wearable integration, Blackmagic Camera now supports integration with the company's ATEM Mini switcher, a staple tool for streamers and broadcasters. This functionality requires the $420 Blackmagic Camera ProDock, which equips iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models with essential broadcast connectivity including HDMI output, timecode synchronization, USB-C ports, and additional professional features.

When connected through the ProDock to an ATEM Mini switcher via a single HDMI cable, users gain the ability to adjust camera parameters, trigger recording, and control focus and zoom settings. The update also incorporates DaVinci primary color correction tools, allowing creators to apply professional color grading and digital film looks during live production sessions.

Additionally, the software now supports Blackmagic's specialized Focus and Zoom Demand controls—professional-grade knob and handle accessories designed for broadcast cameras. When connected via USB-C to the ProDock with an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max, these controls enable hands-free zoom and focus adjustments during recording.
