Meta has unveiled Muse Spark, the first model from its newly established Superintelligence team, bringing sophisticated reasoning capabilities to the Meta AI app. The lightweight system marks a significant shift in the company's AI strategy following a lukewarm reception to previous releases. Spark represents the beginning of what Meta calls its Muse era, with plans to introduce increasingly capable versions in the future.

The model comes equipped with multiple operational modes designed to serve different user needs. An "Instant" mode provides quick responses for straightforward queries, while a "Thinking" mode allows the system to spend additional processing time reasoning through complex prompts. Meta has signaled plans to introduce an even more advanced "Contemplating" mode as the product matures, though this feature is not yet available to users.

One of Spark's standout capabilities is its ability to coordinate multiple AI subagents simultaneously. When tasked with complex projects like family vacation planning, different agents can work in parallel—one developing an itinerary while another identifies kid-friendly attractions. This multi-agent approach enables more sophisticated problem-solving across diverse domains.

The model operates as a natively multimodal system, supporting images, video, and audio inputs. Users can photograph objects and ask Muse Spark questions about their contents, similar to existing visual search tools. Additionally, the system includes an integrated shopping assistant that compares products, highlights pros and cons, and provides purchase links directly within the interface.

Muse Spark is currently accessible through the Meta AI app and meta.ai website globally. The company is beginning its rollout in the United States, with expansion to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp planned for the coming weeks. Meta has indicated potential interest in open-sourcing future versions of the model, though the company acknowledged last year it would approach such decisions more carefully going forward.
