OpenAI has released a significant update to its Codex coding agent that establishes the foundation for an upcoming desktop super app combining ChatGPT, Codex, and a web browser into a unified platform. While the full application hasn't launched yet, the latest Codex enhancement reveals OpenAI's vision for an integrated development experience.
The new Codex version introduces multi-purpose AI agents capable of operating across a broader range of tasks while demonstrating increased proactivity. A standout feature is computer use functionality, enabling agents to interact with other applications on your PC. Developers can either specify which program to use or allow the agent to autonomously select the most appropriate tool for the job. OpenAI distinguishes its approach from competitors by implementing optimization that allows agents to operate without consuming excessive system resources, enabling true collaborative workflows between human and machine.
Accompanying the core update, OpenAI has released 111 new plugins that expand Codex's capabilities through skill combinations, app integrations, and model context protocol server connections. These additions provide developers with enhanced ways to gather contextual information and access the tools essential to their workflow.
A built-in browser feature rounds out the release, complete with a commenting system that lets developers prompt Codex to refine specific webpage or web application elements. During demonstrations, Codex team members utilized this tool to instruct the agent to adjust margins and other design elements with natural language commands.
According to Thibault Sottiaux, head of Codex, the company is deliberately building its super app in stages. "This release is about developers," Sottiaux explained. "In the future, we will broaden it up to a wider audience." The phased rollout strategy allows OpenAI to refine the experience through developer feedback before expanding to mainstream users, signaling confidence in the platform's trajectory while maintaining focus on the professional development community.
