Elon Musk's X is rolling out XChat, a dedicated messaging application designed to streamline direct communications for platform users. The standalone app is now available for pre-order on Apple's App Store, with a launch date of April 17 confirmed in the listing.

XChat represents a shift from X's original plan to upgrade its direct messaging feature within the main platform. Rather than integrating enhanced DM functionality directly into X, the company opted to create a separate application that lets users message anyone on the social network. The move aligns with broader trends in tech where messaging services operate as independent platforms rather than integrated features.

The application boasts several privacy-focused capabilities. All conversations use end-to-end encryption to protect message content from interception. Users can edit and delete messages for all conversation participants, giving them control over their communication history. The app also supports disappearing messages that automatically vanish within five minutes, ideal for sharing sensitive information. Additional privacy controls include the ability to block screenshot captures.

XChat accommodates both one-on-one chats and large group conversations, supporting up to 481 members in a single group. Voice and video calling functionality works across different devices, enabling seamless communication regardless of whether participants use phones, tablets, or other platforms.

The company committed to maintaining user privacy by ensuring XChat operates without advertisements and does not engage in user tracking. This privacy-first approach distinguishes the app in a market where many messaging platforms monetize user data.

iPhone and iPad users can currently pre-order XChat to have it automatically download on their devices when the app officially launches. The availability of an Android version remains unspecified at this time.
