Google has expanded its AI assistant strategy to the desktop, rolling out a native Gemini application for Mac users just a day after launching its Windows counterpart. The new macOS app delivers what the company describes as a "native desktop experience," designed to integrate seamlessly into users' daily workflows on Apple's operating system.

The Gemini app leverages intuitive keyboard shortcuts for quick access. By default, users can press Option and Space to open a mini chat interface, while Option, Shift, and Space launches the full Gemini chat experience. Both keyboard bindings are customizable through the app's settings, allowing users to tailor the experience to their preferences.

One of the app's standout features is its ability to accept and process diverse content types. Users can share files, images, documents, code snippets, and data directly with Gemini, asking the AI questions about their screen content or uploaded materials. The app goes further by enabling users to share entire web pages with the assistant, not just what's currently visible on their display. This flexibility positions Gemini as a versatile research and productivity tool.

The application also taps into Google's generative capabilities, supporting image generation via Nano and video creation through Veo. This multimedia support extends Gemini's usefulness beyond text-based interactions, enabling creative and technical tasks directly from the desktop.

Compatibility requirements are relatively straightforward: the Gemini app runs on Macs with macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later and is available in all countries and languages where Gemini is currently supported. Michael Friedman, group product manager for the Gemini app, hinted at future developments in a statement, noting that Google is "building the foundation for a truly personal, proactive and powerful desktop assistant, with more news to share in the coming months."

This move arrives as Apple prepares to unveil its own generative AI enhancements to Siri at its June developer conference. Apple's revamped Siri will leverage Gemini models, potentially creating an interesting dynamic between the two tech giants' AI strategies on macOS.
