Roblox has reached a $12 million settlement with Nevada to resolve child safety allegations, avoiding trial as the platform faces over 100 pending lawsuits across multiple states. The agreement marks a significant milestone in addressing concerns surrounding online protection for minors on the user-generated content platform.
Under the settlement terms, Roblox will allocate $10 million over three years to support local children's organizations including the Boys and Girls Club and similar nonprofits. An additional $2.5 million will fund a dedicated law enforcement liaison position and comprehensive online safety awareness campaigns throughout Nevada.
The company has committed to implementing substantial safety upgrades that fundamentally reshape how young users interact on the platform. A new age verification system combining facial age estimation technology with government-issued ID validation will restrict cross-age communications. Children will only be able to communicate with peers in similar age brackets, while users under 16 cannot message adults unless they're designated "trusted friends"—a relationship that must be established through QR code assignment. This requirement ensures any adult-minor interactions stem from pre-existing relationships rather than chance encounters.
Expanded parental oversight tools will now accommodate accounts for users up to age 16, extending the previous 13-year-old threshold. The platform is establishing specialized account tiers: Roblox Kids for ages five through eight and Roblox Select for ages nine through fifteen, each featuring tailored content and messaging restrictions appropriate to developmental stages.
The company will also curate a dedicated list of age-appropriate games, restricting younger users' access to adult-oriented content. These protections complement recently introduced children's account guidelines that segment the user base by age demographics.
Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford emphasized the settlement's significance, stating it establishes foundational safety standards he hopes will influence how other online platforms approach youth protection. However, Roblox continues managing substantial legal exposure from additional state investigations and lawsuits, suggesting the Nevada resolution may represent only an initial step in addressing broader industry concerns about minor protection on interactive digital platforms.
