Roblox is rolling out its most significant platform overhaul since launching age verification measures last year. Beginning mid-May, the gaming platform will require users to operate within one of three distinct account tiers based on age verification, fundamentally reshaping how players access content and interact on the service.

The three-tier system divides users into Kids (ages 5-8), Select (ages 9-15), and standard Roblox (16+) accounts in the United States, though age ranges will adjust by region. Each tier aligns with Roblox's existing content maturity framework: Minimal, Mild, Moderate, and Restricted categories. Kids accounts face the strictest limitations, disabling chat by default and restricting access to only Minimal and Mild experiences. Select accounts allow age-appropriate social features and enable chat with peers and verified trusted contacts, plus access to Moderate content. Users aged 16 and above gain full platform features, though Restricted content remains locked until age 18.

The company reports that over half its user base has completed age verification through either ID verification or facial recognition technology. Global rollout of these account tiers should conclude by June. Critically, users who decline to complete age verification will be automatically placed into a Kids-equivalent experience with chat disabled and content access capped at Mild ratings.

Roblox acknowledges the substantial challenge of moderating millions of user-created games within this framework. The platform's approach combines AI content monitoring with developer accountability measures. Creators must complete identity verification and pay $5 monthly for Roblox Plus to signal long-term commitment, with the theory being that developers meeting these requirements will properly label their content's maturity rating.

This tiered enforcement system marks a decisive shift in how Roblox manages its vast creator ecosystem and protects younger users. As the platform continues refining its safety mechanisms, the success of these measures will largely depend on developer compliance and the effectiveness of AI-driven content classification systems handling an ever-expanding game library.
